Demi Lovato paid homage to her grandfather in a touching tribute after revealing at Logo TV's first Trailblazers event in New York City that he came out as gay in the ‘60s. Lovato was there presenting an award to Orange Is the New Black.

"I've never spoken about this before, but my grandfather was a trailblazer himself. He was brave enough to come out in the 1960s, and I feel that a lot of my spirit has come from him,” she said, E! Online reports. “He passed away a few years later and I only wish he could have been able to see all the progress that has been made.”

Lovato is surely doing her fair share to support the LGBT community, as she served as grand marshal of LA’s gay pride parade earlier this month and this weekend, she will be performing at the New York version, New York Pride.

MTV News reports that the event on Tuesday night happened to be the one-year anniversary of the Defense of Marriage Act ruling.
