All-star forward and future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki does not plan on leaving the Dallas Mavericks anytime soon. There was some speculation that Nowitzki was looked at by their in state rivals the Houston Rockets. However that rumor was put to bed by the German basketball star. When asked if he would ever leave the Mavericks he said the possibility is slim to none. He grew up with the organization and he is confidant that team owner Mark Cuban will strike a deal quickly.
“Pretty slim to none. We all know I kind of grew up here in the Mavericks’ (organization). Four years ago, I met with Mark (Cuban) on July 2nd. I don’t like the period of not knowing what’s going on. I don’t like the unknown. Mark and I will hopefully find a good deal for both parties. We have not had any talks yet, but I’m sure that won’t take a long time, said Nowitzki, reported by the Dallas Morning News.
The team President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson knows for certain Nowitzki is not going anywhere. He feels the seven-footer loves the city of Dallas and that he built the franchise. Nelson has Nowizki’s best interests in mind as well as the teams.
“Obviously, Dirk’s not going anywhere. He’s built this franchise. He’s been with us from day one. Certainly, there’s negotiations to take place, but he loves this city and he wants to call it his home. We certainly reciprocate those feelings, so our hope is we’ll get something done that’s not only in Dirk’s best [interests] but also affects the flexibility of the future of the Mavericks,” said Nelson, confirmed by the Dallas Morning News.
Last season, Nowitzki averaged 21.7 points per game and 6.2 rebounds. He averages 22.5 points per game for his career so he was really close to averaging that amount last season, warranted by ESPN. Also, he was voted to another all-star team, which makes him a 12-time all-star overall. He is the leading scorer in the Dallas Mavericks’ history and he is the face of the franchise. There is no reason for him to leave.
