Reports are surfacing claiming Emma Watson’s American maid worked for her illegally in the UK.
Immigration officials are looking into the reports claiming the maid working at Watson’s London home was holding a tourist visa, reported The Independent. Under UK law, foreign citizens cannot work in the UK on a tourist visa.
If found guilty of the breach of immigration laws, Watson could face a fine of up to 10,000 English pounds, reported the Daily Mail.
The maid originally worked at Watson’s home in New York last year. It is alleged she made trips to London to provide her services at Watson’s Islington home between September 2013 and February 2014.
During one of these trips, UK Border Agency staff allegedly confronted the maid regarding her ability to pay for her stay in London. Officials began to look into the situation after receiving a complaint about the maid being paid illegally.
Watson, worth 30 million English pounds, can avoid the fine and legal prosecution if she can prove everything possible was done to ensure the correct immigration status of the worker.
Watson is best known for her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the wildly popular Harry Potter films.
