The Philadelphia Flyers traded forward Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. They acquired forward R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round draft pick in the 2015 draft in the trade.
According to USA Today, Umberger is making $4.6 million a season through 2016-17. Hartnell is making $4.75 million a season and is signed through the 2018-19 season. Hartnell has played for the Flyers for the past seven seasons. He has 157 goals and 169 assists in those seven years, according to the Associated Press. Before being with the Flyers he was with the Nashville Predators. In 953 games with the Predators and Flyers Hartnell has 250 goals and 537 points. He has 19 goals and 47 points in 91 playoff games.
"He is the epitome of the type of player we want in our organization," Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said of Hartnell. "He is a talented, tough, hard-working player who brings valuable experience and leadership on and off the ice."
Umberger spent his first three seasons with the Flyers. He was traded to the Blue Jackets in June 2008. The trade happed shortly after he helped lead the Flyers to the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals. Last season he had 18 goals and 34 points for the Blue Jackets, according to NHL.com. He has 169 career goals and 366 points in 673 games.
"It's all come full-circle," Umberger told the Columbus Dispatch. "I'm excited. From my exit interview until now, it felt like a lot of waiting ... a lot of anxiety and just wondering how this was going to go. But I couldn't have asked for a better resolution. It's a city I'm familiar with. It's a franchise that I have so much respect for, and I'm excited to be back."
The Flyers have about $4.23 million in cap space. They still have work to do as they have to re-sign Brayden Schenn and get a backup goalie.
