Grumpy Cat’s theatrical movie deal never panned out, but at least Tardar Sauce can still become a TV movie star. Lifetime is going to air a Christmas special starring the Internet’s favorite cat titled Worst Christmas Ever.
Spongebob Squarepants’ Tim Hill is writing the script with Jeff Morris, reports The Hollywood Reporter, which first confirmed the news. Tardar Sauce, as her owner named her, will star as a cat that always gets passed over at the pet store, until a 12-year-old girl picks her up. The girl and Tardar share a special ability - they can communicate with each other.
“It brings fun and irreverence that we haven't had at Lifetime,” Lifetime vp original movies Arturo Interian told THR. “We're so known for our heartfelt sentimentality that it will poke fun at those stereotypes.”
Interian says the film will mix Home Alone and Die Hard and will also feature cameos from other Internet celebrities. It will be filmed this summer.
Tardar became an Internet meme in 2012, inspired a book and coffee products and was a big draw at the 2013 SXSW.
Back in May 2013, Tardar and her owners signed a movie deal with Broken Road Productions (Jack and Jill, Here Comes the Boom), but that never worked out. Still, the Facebook page has 5.7 million likes and Tardar’s familiar face can be seen nearly everywhere there are memes.
No air date has been set for Worst Christmas Ever, but it would probably be a good idea not to air it back-to-back with the Whitney Houston biopic.
