In what was supposed to be a life long dream turned into a living nightmare. Baylor University basketball prospect Isaiah Austin is no longer eligible for the NBA draft because of Marfan syndrome. The seven foot one center announced the medical-condition will not allow him to play basketball anymore. How Austin found out about his condition was genetic testing the NBA draft does every year for players eligible for being picked. His medical test results proved he had Marfan syndrome.
"They said I wouldn't be able to play basketball anymore at a competitive level. They found the gene in my blood sample. They told me that my arteries in my heart are enlarged and that if I overwork myself and push too hard that my heart could rupture. The draft is four days away, and I had a dream that my name was going to be called," said Austin, according to ESPN.
Baylor University Bears head coach Scott Drew addressed his former players condition as overwhelming. However, Drew supports Austin and gives words of encouragement. Saying his old University has his back through this tough time.
"This is devastating news, but Isaiah has the best support system anyone could ask for, and he knows that all of Baylor Nation is behind him," head coach Scott Drew said, confirmed by
CBS.
The bad news Austin received about his medical condition is unjust due to the fact he has already dealt with serious issues before with another injury. He has had to deal with having little to no vision in his right eye since a dunking accident in middle school. It caused him to have more than one operation which could not be fixed, reported by Yahoo! Sports.
