Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner, Nick Cannon, Alicia Keys and many other Hollywood stars came together for a new PSA promoting education for young women, particularly in Africa. The video is part of a new U.S. Agency for International Development campaign called Let Girls Learn.
In the video, each celebrity talks about an incident where girls tried desperately to learn. Garner begins the video with the story that brought the cause to the world’s attention - the Nigerian school kidnapping, in which a terrorist group abducted nearly 300 girls on their way to their final exams. The goal is to help some of the 65 million girls who are not in school around the world get an education.
“A threat to girls’ education in anywhere is a threat to progress everywhere,” Modern Family star Julie Bowen says in the video.
In conjunction with the video’s release, USAID announced a $231.6 million plan to launch new programs in Nigeria, Afghanistan, Jordan and South Sudan to help ensure that young girls get to school safely. Another program will help boost Guatemala’s own successful efforts to help girls there learn.
Other celebrities that appear in the video include James Van Der Beek, Tyler Perry, Lance Bass, Susan Sarandon, Soledad O’Brien, Josh Duhamel, Kelly Osbourne and Chris Colfer.
