John Brooks should certainly sleep well tonight. Not only did he embark on an excruciating 90 minute marathon of an event we like to call “soccer”, here in America, but he is also a very big reason that the U.S. won their first game in this year’s World Cup.
Brooks scored in the 86th minute, 85 minutes after Clint Dempsey scored the fastest goal in the history of U.S. World Cup Soccer; ESPN.com reports that it only took 31 seconds for the Americans to procure a 1-0 lead over Ghana, a lead which stood until some beautiful teamwork by the Ghanaian tied up the game in the 82nd minute.
The U.S. is now tied with Germany atop the standings as far as wins go, notes a href= http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/groups/>FIFA.com and will meet Portugal on Sunday and then Germany on the 26th to round out competition before the elimination rounds start.
While it is a long shot that the U.S. will beat Germany, seeing as they are ranked second in the world while the Americans are slotted all the way down at thirteen, this thrilling and momentum-seizing victory should go a long way to convincing them that they can do it.
You can bet that Brooks doesn’t have a doubt in his mind.
