First baseman Jon Singleton signed a historic contract with the Houston Astros on Monday. He will be called up from Triple-A for Tuesday’s game.
According to Yahoo Sports, Singleton’s deal is for five years guaranteed and $10 million guaranteed. There are three option years in the contract. The deal could be worth up to $35 million over eight years, according to the Houston Chronicle, which first reported the news. Singleton is the first player to sign a big deal without experience in the Major Leagues.
Singleton is the Astros number three prospect according to MLBPipeline, MLB.com notes. Shortstop Carlos Correa and right-hander pitcher Mark Appel are the Astros top two prospects.
This season Singleton is playing for Triple-A Oklahoma City. In 54 games with Triple-A Oklahoma this season Singleton is hitting .267 with 14 homeruns, and a slugging percentage of .544, according to ESPN. He isn’t the only minor league player to be added to the Astros’s roster. Outfielder George Springer was added to the Astros roster in April. Springer was hitting .294 with ten homeruns and 25 RBIs.
The signing of Singleton is good news for the Astros. They had been struggling offensively at first base. Jesus Guzman was hitting .208 and Marc Krauss was hitting only .173. Singleton should help improve the struggles at first base offensively.
