The United States opened their 2014 World Cup with their first game in group play against Ghana tonight and while the U.S. picked up a huge 2-1 victory, this victory did come with a price. In the 21st minute of the game, Jozy Altidore strained his left hamstring and had to leave the game early.
Altidore was running down the field with Ghana’s John Boye when he attempted to gain control of the ball and take a shot on goal when he suddenly grabbed his left hamstring and immediately dropped on the field reports ESPN. The 24 year-old forward was not able to leave the field under his own power and had to be carried off the field.
This comes as a major cause for concern for the U.S. team with Altidore’s status uncertain for the remainder of the World Cup. According to CBS News, Altidore was not able to return to the game and was replaced at forward by Aron Johannsson. Altidore will be re-evaluated this Tuesday at the team’s training headquarters in Sao Paulo.
Altidore is one of the most popular and passionate players on the U.S. National team and everyone is being optimistic that Altidore will be able to participate in the rest of this year's World Cup.
The U.S. had a very hard fought physical victory against Ghana today and looks to continue their journey in the 2014 World Cup with their next game against Portugal this Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.
