Minnesota to Boston. This trip has been made by some notable sports stars: David Ortiz and Kevin Garnett. Could Kevin Love be following in their footsteps?
Love, who had been with the Minnesota Timberwolves the last six seasons, visited Boston over the weekend to see what life in the city was like.
Love has the choice to opt out of his contract with the Timberwolves at the end of the 2015 season, which would make him an unrestricted free agent. Since it is unlikely that he will resign with Minnesota, the team is very interested in trading him before the February trade deadline.
A trade to Boston seems like a possibility, and Love said that he would consider the move. He has an affinity for the Celtics’ history, which features 17 NBA Championships (the most of any franchise).
“He understands the history of the Celtics, and that’s what he’s looking for,” said Tim Welsh, of Comcast Sportsnet . “He wants a championship atmosphere and a culture, not necessarily a team that is going to win next year, but somebody that he can go to and say ‘I’m going to be a piece in the future of a championship culture’.”
During his weekend in Boston, Love went to a Boston Red Sox game and met with Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo, with whom he could potentially team up, reports the Boston Globe.
By coming to Boston, Love would hope to follow in the footsteps of Ortiz and Garnett. After six years with the Minnesota Twins, Ortiz went to the Red Sox and has claimed three World Series Championships. Garnett, who spent 12 years with the Timberwolves, came to the Celtics in 2007 and helped lead the team to their first title in over 20 years.
