While director Marc Webb established his career off of the 2009 romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer, due to his commitments to the Amazing Spider-Man movies of late, he hasn't been able to go back to his roots. The filmmaker has just signed on to direct the pilot for the upcoming musical-comedy pilot Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
TheWrap got word on the show and Webb's involvement. Described as a "half-hour comedy with musical elements," the pilot will feature a script from Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada).
The show centers on a kooky girl named Rebecca (Rachel Bloom), a member of a prestigious Manhattan law firm, who, determined to find love, decides to quit her job and move to West Covina, California. David Nevins, the president of Showtime, explained that Webb was "eager to flex different creative muscles after his blockbuster successes" and its not hard to see why. While they do have their fans, the latest Spider-Man don't quite carry the same flavor that were brought to Webb's feature debut, expect for the scenes with Gwen and Peter, which seem to be Webb's wheelhouse.
Of course, this is only a pilot, and not a series pick up, but considering that Showtime picked up Cameron Crowe's pilot, it is possible that they will be picking this new show up too.
Webb is still committed to one more Amazing Spider-Man movie, which may or may not have been pushed back to 2016. While Webb hasn't quite has direct experience making a musical before, this scene from (500) Days of Summer suggests that he will be comfortable enough.
