Wake Forest University announced Monday that it will host a private memorial service for the late Dr. Maya Angelou on Saturday.
The North Carolina university has announced that the service will start at 10 a.m. on June 7 at the Wait Chapel. Since the venue is small, Angelou’s family has decided to make the ceremony private. However, the university will provide an online live-stream for the public.
The acclaimed author and poet’s son, Guy B. Johnson, will be announcing plans for public memorial services around the country at a later date.
Angelou died on Wednesday at age 86 in Winston-Salem. According to the Associated Press, she began teaching at Wake Forest in the early 1980s and frequently read her work for students there.
Angelou was a revered American author who also championed civil rights. She wrote several books in her life, including the memoir I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.
She also read the poem “On the Pulse of the Morning” during President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. “Her greatest stories were true,” President Barack Obama said in a Tweet.
