The beat keeps going on as the New York Mets slowly slip into the abyss of New York sports talk. Talk now while you can, because pretty soon this club will lose all relevancy until the off-season.
Today however, the Mets defeated the Padres by a score of 3-1, to improve their record to 31-38 on the season, according to ESPN.com. Starter Daisuke Matsuzaka went out there today with a horrible upset stomach and could only give the Mets one inning. From there, the bullpen came in and did the job against the worst hitting team in the majors right now.
With taking the series against San Diego two games to one, the Mets stopped a streak that saw them losing eight of their previous nine games, according to MLB.com.
Incredibly, the Mets only sit five games behind division leading Atlanta Braves for the National League East lead. Let’s allow cooler heads to prevail though and realize what this season is: the last of the bad ones hopefully.
The only thing fans can ask is the development of youngsters. Perhaps that’s why it’s such a bitter pill to swallow for Mets fans when they witness catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud demoted to the minors. Still though, there are many youngsters that need to develop the rest of 2014. Zack Wheeler is one of them, and although continuing to struggle, they need to get this guy on track.
For the first time in his tenure, manager Terry Collins has professed a somewhat of a defeatist attitude when describing his club. Making excuses such as being “tired” and “worn-down” will not fly in New York.
There are two major headlines surrounding this team right now. One is the future of Terry Collins and the other is the promotion of stud pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard. Stay tuned Mets fans to see which will be decided first.
