The Mexico Football Association will not receive any punishment after their fans were reported to have used homophobic chants during their first game versus Cameroon.

Mexican fans shout ‘Puto’, meaning a male prostitute, when opposing goalies takes a goal kick in the Mexican football league, according to The Guardian.

The issue came up when the anti-discrimination group, Football Against Racism in Europe, reported hearing the slurs’ after Mexico’s first and second game, versus Brazil.

FIFA investigated the incident and decided no discipline was needed, according to Reuters.

“The Disciplinary Committee has decided that the incident in question is not considered insulting in this specific context. All charges against the Mexican FA have been dismissed,” it said in a statement.

FARE did not agree with FIFA’s handling of the situation, The Telegraph reports.

“If the decision is that the use of the word ‘puto’ is not homophobic then this is disappointing and contradicts the expert advice of the Mexican government’s own anti-discrimination body, Conapred, and numerous other experts.

FARE also reported Croatian and Russian fans displayed neo-Nazi banners at both of the countries first games.

FIFA has not made a ruling on either of those two countries.

FIFA is also looking into the Germany versus Ghana match, where a German fan ran on to the field with Neo-Nazi messages on his body, while several other fans went wearing black-face make up, according to Fox Sports.
