Formula 1 racing legend Michael Schumacher has left the Grenoble hospital where doctors have been treating him since his near-fatal skiing accident in the Alps in December. The former champion’s spokeswoman confirmed on Monday that he is out of a coma.
“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble [hospital] to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore,” rep Sabine Kehm said in a statement, reports The Guardian.
The University Hospital of Lausanne confirmed that he was transferred there to be closer to his home in western Switzerland. However, a spokesperson for the hospital did not go into further details.
The 45-year-old German’s family “would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months,” Kehm added, notes Fox Sports.
His family thanked his supporters and also asked for his privacy as he continues to recover.
Schumacher had been in a coma since the ski accident in December. In April, Kehm said that he was showing “moments of consciousness,” confirming that he was making some progress.
He is one of the most well-known F1 drivers in the world, with a remarkable seven world titles and 91 total career wins.
