Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake (6-6) registered a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed just one run in eight innings at AT&T Park. Cincinnati (40-38) has won five of its last six games, while San Francisco (46-33) has dropped 12 of its last 16.
In the top of the fifth Reds' Zack Cosart stepped to the plate with two outs and a runner on first. Cincinnati's No. 9 hitter, Leake, waited in the on-deck circle. In a scoreless game, manager Bruce Bochy opted for Ryan Vogelsong to pitch to Cosart instead of Leake. Cosart doubled down the left-field line, which scored the runner at first, according to MLB.com
In the sixth inning outfielder Hunter Pence hit a two-out triple, which Leake followed up by walking Buster Posey. Leake faced Pablo Sandoval, who entered the game 11 of 17 in hi career against Leake, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer
Outfielder Jay Bruce extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games on a single in the fifth inning. Zack Cozart doubled to score Bruce from first base just ahead of a relay throw to the plate.
