After 12 innings, the Milwaukee Brewers had combined to score two runs. In the top of the 13th, the Brewers pushed four runs across the plate en route to a 5-1 win.
Milwaukee catcher Jonathan Lucroy gave himself a birthday present one day early as he smacked the go-ahead two run home run in the top of the 13th inning. Following the blast, the Brewers loaded the bases with a single, a double and a walk. First baseman Mark Reynolds then singled in a run. Three batters later, second baseman Rickie Weeks brought in the fourth run of the rally when he was hit by a pitch reports ESPN.
The Mets, who went one-two-three in the bottom of the 13th, had their opportunities to end the game earlier. They left the bases loaded in the 11th when catcher Anthony Recker struck out looking and was ejected from the game for arguing the call. In both the ninth and 10th innings, the Mets had runners on first and second, but a ground out and a fielder’s choice ended those opportunities.
While both starting pitchers received no decisions, they pitched well. New York’s Jonathan Niese went 7 2/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits and whiffing eight. Milwaukee’s Kyle Lohse allowed one run on four hits in eight innings.
“[Kyle] was unbelievable; he just made some big pitches when he had to,” Lucroy said after the game on MLB.com. “He was just spot on, everything; he was hitting spots, he was down in the zone, he was efficient it was awesome, it was great to be a part of.”
The Brewers got on the board first on a solo homer from third baseman Aramis Ramirez in the top of the second inning. New York evened the score in the fourth on right fielder Bobby Abreu’s sacrifice fly to left.
Milwaukee, who leads the NL Central, will host the Cincinnati Reds beginning on Friday, while the Mets, losers of eight of their last 10, welcome the San Diego Padres to Citi Field.
