Nick Young's agent revealed on Tuesday that the NBA player is opting out of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The move leaves the Lakers with only three players signed for the next season, according to ESPN, who first reported the news. At the moment, the Lakers only have Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Robert Sacre on the roster for 2014-15.
Young, had until June 25 to decide on staying under contract for this season and had already declared he wouldn't opt in for the next season earlier. Still, while the 6-foot-6 Young wants to explore free agency, much like Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James, he has indicated he would like to return to the Lakers.
"I always wanted to be a Laker and it will be a dream come true to still be here, but it's crazy," Young said nearly two months ago. "You never know what happens. Last year they had a whole different team. It's obvious they're going to make some changes."
The Lakers, who had a disastrous injury-filled season, are clearly poised to go after big names in free agency, but whether they will be able to land any will be interesting.
The Los Angeles Times notes that through 64 games last season with the Lakers, Young put up some strong numbers. He averaged 17.9 points, shot 43.5 percent from the field and hit 38.6 percent of his three point shots.
