Sister to the Duchess of Cambridge and aunt to Prince George of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton is set to cycle 3,000-miles across the United States starting Saturday, June 14.
Middleton is part of an eight-person team that is registered for the thirty-third Race Across America event. The route for the race begins in Oceanside, California and ends in Annapolis, Maryland.
According to People , Middleton will be on a team with her brother James as well as their friend James Matthews. The team is cycling to benefit a charity in Matthews’s brother Michael who died in 1999, at age 22, whilst descending Mount Everest.
The Michael Matthews Foundation honors Michael for being the youngest Briton to have reached Everest’s summit. The goal of the foundation is to raise money to provide education to children who are unlikely to receive one otherwise and to build schools across the globe.
In a column she wrote for the Daily Telegraph, Middleton discusses some of her preparations for the Race Across America, becoming a better cyclist and learning the benefits of clip-in pedals from former Olympic triple jump champion, Jonathan Edwards.
“It was a bit like learning to ride a bike all over again, but after a few laughs and wobbles I got the hang of it, reassured by Jonathan’s advice that ‘as long as you can clip one foot in and out, the other foot can stay in most of the time.’,” Middleton said of learning how to use clip-ins.
Oregon Live, Middleton has a knack for endurance athletics. The 30-year-old English socialite has skied in an endurance ski race, the Switzerland Engadin Marathon, and has taken part in the Highland Cross, a fell run in Scotland.
