While some toddlers would be happy with just a cake on their first birthday, Prince George is no ordinary baby. For his first birthday, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge’s little boy is getting a commemorative £5 coin.
The Royal Mint announced that there will be just 7,500 coins produced and the design was personally approved by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Her Majesty the Queen and the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
However, the coin wont’ actualyl feature a portrait of George. His great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II will be on the head, while the Royal Arms are on the tail.
Also, the coin won’t be cheap. It might say £5 on it, but it will cost you £80.
“As Prince George of Cambridge reaches the significant milestone of turning one year old, we felt there could be no more fitting design to mark the first birthday of our future king than the Royal Arms - the arms of the monarch, minted in honour of the future heir to the throne,” Shane Bissett, Director of Commemorative Coin and Bullion at The Royal Mint, said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Prince George himself made an appearance on Father’s Day to see Prince William play a polo match at Cirencester Park in Gloucestershire, E! News. He made some attempts to walk and did take his first steps in public, with some help from Duchess Kate.
