The match lasted almost four hours with Nadal occasionally stopping for a break. After Djokovic won the first set, Nadal knew he had to step up his game despite the heat.

"It was very important for me to win that second set. Without that second set, I don't think I would be sitting here with the trophy now," Nadal said.

Nadal’s win makes him the first male player ever to win a major title nine times, reported BBC News.

Despite Djokovic’s loss, he still displayed good sportsmanship.

"It was an emotional day. I have tried with all my power, my strength, my capacities but Rafa was the strongest on court," he said.
