Actor Robert Downey Jr. issued a statement Monday afternoon, following the arrest of his son Indio. The 20-year-old was arrested on Sunday in West Hollywood on charges of cocaine possession.
The Iron Man actor sent a statement to TMZ and other sites, making reference to his own past issues with drugs.
“Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it,” Downey said. “Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being.”
Downey then thanked the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department for stepping in. His family believes that “Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.”
Downey himself had a very public struggle with drugs in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which included stints in rehab and jail. However, he recovered and has become one of the highest paid actors in the world, thanks to the success of the Iron Man films, The Avengers and his two Sherlock Holmes films.
Indio was arrested at around 2 p.m. Sunday, allegedly with cocaine in his possession. He was released on $10,000 bail at midnight this morning.
