Right wing Ryan Callahan signed a six-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday. He is now signed through 2020.
Callahan had spent most of his career with the New York Rangers. The Lightning acquired him in March in the Martin St. Louis trade. The Rangers will get a second-round draft pick for 2015 and the Lightning will get a seventh-round pick since Callahan resigned with the Lightning. The deal is worth $34.8 million with an average of $5.8 million a season, according to ESPN. Callahan will make $6 million next season, $6.4 million in 2015-16, $6.5 million in 2016-18, and $4.7 million in the final two years of the contract.
"I couldn't be happier to be part of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization for the next six years and I am excited for this new chapter of my career," Callahan said. "Tampa Bay has been a great place to live and play from the day I got there. As soon as the season ended I knew it was a place I wanted to be."
Callahan played in 20 games for the Lightning last season. In those 20 games he had six goals and 11 points, according to the Associated Press. He has 138 goals and 127 assists in 470 career games with the Rangers and Lightning.
In addition to resigning Callahan the Lightning boughtout forward Ryan Malone. Malone had one year left on his contract where he made $2.5 million, but had a $4.5 million cap hit. Last season he had five goals and 15 points in 57 games. In 342 games with the Lightning Malone had 92 goals and 201 points. He is now a free agent.
