Ryan Fitzpatrick has won the starting quarterback position for the Houston Texans, beating out Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage.
Head coach Bill O’Brien told the Texans that Fitzpatrick had earned it.
“He’s a guy that’s earned the job,” O’Brien said. “All four of them put in a lot of good work, but at the end of the day, Ryan Fitzpatrick’s our starter.”
O’Brien thought the team should know who the starting quarterback would be going forward into training camp.
Fitzpatrick was excited about being named the starter, CBS Houston reports.
“This is going to be a really fun system to play in,” he said.
O’Brien thought that the three other quarterbacks were missing something that Fitzpatrick had, ESPN.com reports.
“With all three of those guys, we need just a but more consistency,” the coach said.
Fitzpatrick was signed by the Texans in the offseason, after starting for the Tennessee Titans last year. He threw for 2,454 yards with 14 touchdown passes.
Prior to Tennessee, he was the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback from 2009 to 2012, throwing for 3,000 yards and at least 23 touchdowns each of his last three years with the team, according to ESPN.
The Texans open training camp on July 30.
