A 6-foot, 180 pound top prospect heading into the 2014 NHL Draft at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on June 27-28 was unable to do a single pull-up at the NHL Combine.
17-year-old Sam Bennett, a center for the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL, finished the 2013-14 season with 91 points – 36 goals, 55 assists according to USAToday. A number of OHL players put up similar or better numbers than Bennett, but he only played in 57 of 68 total season games while remaining in the top 20 players for both goals and assists.
"I was wanting to do the best I can in every test," Bennett said. "But, I guess, ultimately games aren't won or lost if you can do a pull-up in the gym." via ThePostGame. This was the first season that pull-ups were integrated into the NHL combine exercises because GMs felt it gave the best reading of the prospects true strength.
All things considered GMs will have a lot to consider, especially with the 2007 NBA Combine in mind when Kevin Durant was the only prospect unable to bench a single rep of 185-pounds. Durant is now considered a top three player in the NBA today.
