The San Diego Padres have fired their general manager Josh Byrnes after a 32-44 start to the season.
Byrnes was promoted to the position of general manager on Oct. 26, 2011 after the teams former manager, Jed Hoyer, went to the Chicago Cubs, according to the Padres. At the time he was hired the Padres had gone through three general managers in three seasons.
In statement, Executive chairman Ron Fowler said that this wasn’t a completely bad thing for the organization.
“This is a reset,” Fowler said. “This is not a step back. We’re doing this so that we could move forward. We expect continuous improvement from the organization. We’re getting it in other areas. We are not getting it on the baseball field.”
Padres President and CEO Mike Dee said a statement that the search will begin for a new GM, but senior vice president for baseball operations Omar Minaya and assistant generals managers AJ Hinch and Fred Uhlman Jr. will work together in the GM position, according to the AP.
He added that the ownership wants a team that gets into the postseason consistently, but the results have not been there, “After a lengthy evaluation of every facet of our baseball operations, we have decided to make this change today.
The Padres were 184-216 in the almost two and a half seasons that he was the GM for the Padres.
