Showtime is spending its pilot season focusing on comedies. The pay-TV network has put in a pilot order for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which will be directed by The Amazing Spider-Man helmer Marc Webb.
Webb will have to ditch his Spider Sense for the skills he honed on (500) Days of Summer for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The project, created by writer/actress Rachel Bloom, will have musical elements weaved into the story about a successful young woman (Bloom) working at a New York law firm who decides to move to California for love.
According to TheWrap, Bloom does have television experience, having appeared in How I Met Your Mother and did voices for Robot Chicken. She’s also recorded albums, including the humorously titled Suck It, Christmas!!! (A Chanukah Album).
“This pilot is an exciting change of pace for us” Showtime Networks president David Nevins said in a statement, notes The Hollywood Reporter. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is built on the inspired comedy and songwriting of Rachel Bloom – who we believe, is ready to break out.”
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was written by Bloom with executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought A Zoo, Annie), who brought the project to Showtime. It will be produced by CBS Television Studios.
Showtime has been looking to add more comedies as of late, ordering Cameron Crowe’s Roadies pilot. The network is also developing Billions, a drama from Andrew Ross Sorkin of the New York Times.
