Sigourney Weaver has been welcomed back to Pandora. The actress will return for James Cameron’s three sequels to Avatar.
Variety reported that Cameron and 20th Century Fox announced Weaver’s return on Monday. Cameron acknowledged that Weaver’s character from the first Avatar, Grace Augustine, didn’t survive the film.
“She’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films,” Cameron said.
The Avatar sequels will be filmed consecutively, according to Deadline. The first sequel will be released in December 2016, the next installment in December 2017 and the final film in December 2018. None of the sequels have been officially titled. Production is set to begin later this year.
Weaver will be rejoining Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang for the sequels. Lang’s character, Col. Miles Quaritch, also died in the first film.
The original Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time, unadjusted for inflation. Screen Daily reported that the film grossed $2.78 billion worldwide.
