Spain, the defending World Cup Champions and winners of the last three national championships, will not be moving on past the group stages of the 2014 World Cup.

On Wednesday afternoon Spain and Chile were facing off in a group B matchup. Spain lost 2-1. Coming off an embarrassing loss to the Netherlands, 5-1, Spain played very sloppy. Now with the Netherlands winning their second game, they and Chile both raised their point totals to six. It is now impossible for Spain to move on in the World Cup.
Spain is now the first defending champions to lose their first two matches in the following World Cup. This is also the first time in eight years that Spain has been knocked out of a major tournament via TheGuardian. For the Spanish captain and goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, 33, this could be his last year as a starter on the national team.
Through two games Spain’s goal differential is an astounding -6. The two goals for Chile came in the first half – the 19th and 43rd minutes according to TheWallStreetJournal. Looking at the statistics Spain actually outplayed Chile – five more shots on goal, 12% more time of possession and six more corner kicks – but the only thing that matters in the end is the score.
