Switzerland scored in the third and final scheduled minute of stoppage time to defeat Ecuador 2-1 and steal all three points.
In what has become a theme in the tournament, Switzerland came from behind to win thanks to the heroics of Haris Seferovic
To try and keep the World Cup groups somewhat balanced, the top eight seeds are all in different groups. Switzerland, who is one of the top eight seeds thanks to an impressive qualifying campaign where they did not lose a single match, is considered the weakest of the eight seeded teams. So France, Ecuador, and Honduras were rather fortunate in their being selected to play in Group E, and avoid some of the more feared top seeds such as Brazil, Argentina, and Germany.
Most expect France to win the group, though EmpireOfSoccer.com picked Ecuador, and Honduras is considered the weakest team, so this game would have a major impact on who could likely join France in the next round.
Ecuador who struck first in the 22nd minute when Enner Valencia was able to get his head on a cross from Walter Ayoví off a set piece.
This was certainly not one of the better matches of the tournament, both teams had a lot of unfinished crosses and through passes that ended up out of bounds.
Despite out shooting the South Americans 9-4, and having nearly twice as much possession in the first half, Switzerland went into the break down 1-0.
Switzerland came out a more aggressive and focused team in the opening minutes of the second half. Admir Mehmedi, who came on as a substitute at halftime made quite the entrance, scoring the equalizer for Switzerland just three minutes into the second half. Mehmedi, who scored 12 goals this season in the Bundesliga with FC Feiburg, headed home a corner kick from Ricardo Rodriguez, thanks to some shoddy marking by Ecuador.
Josip Drmic thought he had put Switzerland ahead in the 70th minute, but realized he was called for offsides just as he was about to begin his celebration. On second look, Drmic was onsides and the Switz should have been up 2-1.
Ecuador's best chance to take the full three points came in the 86th minute when a free kick from second half substitute, Michael Arroyo, gave Switz goalkeeper Diego Benaglio a bit of a scare.
Ecuador had a chance of their own to win the game in stoppage time, but failed to get a shot of, which lead to the Switz counter-attack that resulted in Seferovic's game winner.
Thanks to Seferovic, there still has not been a tie in the tournament after nine matches.
