The Houston Texans first round draft pick Jadeveon Clowney underwent sports hernia surgery and will miss time until training camp.

Head coach Bill O'Brien made the announcement on Friday at the NRG stadium and noted that Clowney hasn't had the groin injury too long, but everyone decided it would be best to have surgery, reports the Houston Chronicle.

"It was the best thing for J.D. and the best thing for our team and the best thing for our organization." O'Brien added Clowney should be fully healed and raring to go in time for the start of training camp in late July.

Clowney officially signed with the team late last week to a four-year $22.272 million contract, which is fully guaranteed. The contract also have an option for a fifth-season, should he do well for the team.

While playing defensive end at South Carolina, the team was moving him to outside linebacker and expressed that he isn't necessarily the starter. "For any rookie it's very difficult to make the jump from college to pro" but Clowney was doing well and working hard, O'Brien said.
