Thomas Müller, 24, of Germany, is on pace to become the most decorated goal scorer in World Cup history. After scoring five goals in 2010 during his first World Cup, Müller picked up right where he left off posting a hat trick in Germany’s opening game against Portugal Monday afternoon.
The current record holder for most goals in world cup history is Ronaldo of Brazil with a total of 15 in 19 matches according to Fifa. Müller already has eight goals with two more games to play in the group stages. If Germany was to win the World Cup he would have a total of six matches left to play this summer.
Considering how effective he was against Portugal and the fact that he is only 24 years old make him a viable contender to break Ronaldo’s record. He could potentially play in another two world cups.
His first goal of the match on Monday came 12 minutes into the first half when he took a penalty kick after Joao Pereira fouled Mario Gotze in the box via CBSSports. His next goal came in stoppage time of the first half when he blocked the clearing attempt by Bruno Alves and buried the ball in the net with his left foot.
At that point it was 3-0 Germany heading into the second half. Later in the 78th minute he finished his hat trick after the goalie for Portugal, Rui Patricio, blocked a cross into the box that landed right at Müller’s foot.
Overall Germany looked like a powerhouse while Portugal looked very sloppy.
