Tommy Hass, the former number two tennis player in the world, will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and will be out for the rest of the tennis season.

This is Haas’s fourth surgery on his shoulder. He pulled out of his opening match at the French open this year and dropped out of a tournament last week to look at the injury, according to the AP.

Haas said he wasn’t expecting the diagnosis, SI.com reports.

.

“The diagnosis was a real shock for me but a surgery can’t be avoided because the injury is very serious,” Haas said. “I don’t want to retire from the tennis stage with an injury but would like to end my career on the court.”

Haas has won the Comeback Player of the year twice and is currently the oldest player in the Top 100 rankings, according to ATP World Tour.

He told the ATP website he wants to come back and keep playing.

“It’s a big step backwards in a long process, but I want to hopefully come back again at some point and finish my career on my own terms when I’m ready for it. I’ll try everything I can.”

Haas has a history with injuries. Along with the four shoulder surgeries, he has undergone hip and elbow operations in 2010.

He became the world number 2 after claiming the ATP World Tour Master 1000 crown in 2001.
