The news is abuzz today that news anchor Diane Sawyer will be leaving ABC’s World News and George Stephanopoulos and David Muir have been named as her replacements. George Stephanopoulos will share the duties with Muir, as Stephanopolous is a co-anchor for Good Morning America and he also hosts the ABC program This Week.
In addition to his new duties, Muir also is a co-anchor for 20/20 along with Elizabeth Vargas. He will also take on managing editor duties at the World News desk and he has plenty of experience when it comes to reporting the news, having been in the business for almost 20 years. With his experience in reporting big news headlines, there is plenty to know about the World News program’s newest addition to the anchor chair.

According to the ABC News website, Muir was the first journalist from the United States who did a report on a famine in the city of Mogadishu. The clip below shows Muir after his return from Somalia and reporting on how mom bloggers helped to fight famine in the country.

9. Edward R. Murrow award
He has won the Edward R. Murrow award due to his broadcasts on topics such as the crisis in Somalia to the on the scene reporting he did with his team in Moore, Oklahoma when tornadoes hit the city. While working in Boston, he received the award for his reporting on the path of the hijackers on September 11. He has also presented the award.

In August of 2003, Muir became an anchor for World’s News Now and soon he would lead many of the news reports both here in the United States and internationally. In 2011 and 2012, the most airtime that came for news reporting belonged to Muir. He once did a tour of the news studio where he works.

One of the places he went to was Iran to talk to the younger Iranians during the news reports on Iran’s nuclear programs as the U.S. was on their way to have talks with the government.

He was in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit and stayed in the city in order to report on the crisis. Another crisis he was on the scene for was during the superstorm in New York City, also known as Sandy, in 2012. He did a report on the hospital’s attempt to evacuate elderly patients and babies when the power went out.

Before joining ABC News, Muir worked for the station’s affiliate in Boston and he helped the station earn the National Headliner Award. The Associated Press also gave him honors for his reports on the 9/11 hijackers. Muir has studied at three institutions. He graduated from Ithaca College as a magna cum laude and he also went to Georgetown University’s Institute on Political Journalism.
