While the U.S. weren't able to keep up with Germany in the second half, Portugal managed to beat Ghana to send the U.S. through to the knockout round anyway.
Germany came out strong in the second half and in the 55th minute star Thomas Mueller was able to send the ball into the back of the net, which would be the only point of the match, USA Today reports.
Still, it isn't a heartbreaking loss since Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal were able to top Ghana 2-1, which left them tied with the U.S. with 4 points, but goal advantage went to the Americans.
"It's huge. Obviously we wanted a tie out of the game," said U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "We should have created a bit more chances. That's something we have to improve on."
While the second half often felt that the U.S. was simply doing its best to hold out against Germany, the U.S. did manage to press a little in the first 45, despite another shaky start.
The U.S. will playing on Tuesday July 1 against the winner of Group H, according to the Los Angeles Times. The final matches won't be played until later in the day, leaving it unsettled for the moment who will face the Americans next week.
