The wife of former Seattle Mariners outfielder Carlos Peguero, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for internet fraud.
According to the Seattle Times, Maria Peguero was sentenced for using a bank card belonging to the wife of Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez and going on an extensive online shopping spree totaling nearly $200,000.
The Associated Press noted that prosecutors said Sandra Hernandez, a Spanish-speaking native, asked her friend Peguero for help in making some online purchases. Her so-called friend then used the information to make several unauthorized purchases at Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.
The red flags went up when the stores started to notice a series of purchases in which the billing and shipping addresses did not match.
Peguero pleaded guilty last February to wire fraud and was sentenced on Monday in federal court in Tacoma, Washington.
In addition to the jail time, she was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $165,000 and will serve three years of supervised probation.
Her husband was signed to the Seattle Mariners in 2005, but played in only two major league games last season before heading to the Kansas City Royals organization.
