Derek Jeter made the most of his last All-Star game going 2-2 and scoring a run to help lead the American League to a 5-3 victory National League.
On just the second pitch of the game, Andrew McCutchen hit a speeding ground ball to Jeter. Jeter dove to stop the ball and threw it to first base, McCutchen just barely got to the bag before the ball, according to MLB.com.
In the bottom of the first inning Jeter went up to bat first with the iconic introduction by Bob Shepard, the long time New York Yankees public address announcer, playing throughout Target Field. The crowd would end up cheering for Jeter for just over a minute, according to ESPN.com.
Jeter would take the second pitch to the opposite field with his classic inside-out swing. He would get a double on the play. Young phenom Mike Trout was up next and after getting the count to 3-2, he would hit a line drive to center field that would hit off the wall. He would make it all the way to third base and Jeter would score.
Robinson Cano, who would end up 0-2 with two strikeouts, was up next. Reigning AL MVP, Miguel Cabrera would then make it 3-0 when he hit a home run to left field. The next two batter, Jose Bautista and Nelson Crux would both get out, ending the first inning with the AL up 3-0.
In the second inning Giancarlo Stanton led off, popping out to Robinson Cano at second base. Amaris Ramirez would then single to center field. He would score during the next at-bat when Chase Utley doubled to center field. Jonathan Lucroy would follow Utley’s lead and double to left field, scoring Utley. The NL would end the top of the second inning down 3-2.
Derek Jeter would lead off again in the bottom of the third inning. He would take the seventh pitch of the at-bat and single into left right field. The next three batters would get out, ending the inning still up 3-2.
Jeter would get his second standing ovation from the crowd when Alexei Ramirez replaced him before the start of the fourth inning. He would then hug each of his AL teammate before going out for a curtain call.
The top of the fourth would showcase the speedy Dee Gordon who came on after Chase Utley got hit by a pitch. After trying to steal second base during Lucroy’s at-bat, he would score from first on a double by Lucroy, tying the game at 3.
The AL would go back on top for good when Mike Trout doubled Derek Norris home in the bottom the fifth inning. They would get one more run when Jose Altuve hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Mike Trout would win the MVP award for going 2-3 with two doubles and two-RBIs.
The American League Champion will now have home field advantage for the World Series.
