In 2013 Andy Murray became the first British born player to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry won the title in 1936. This year however would be a totally different story. Murray, No. 3 ranked player in the world, was knocked out in the quarter-final in straight sets to Bulgarian born player Grigor Dimitrov – No. 11 in the world.
The score line read 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 via SMH.
Murray was trying to join the likes of Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer, the only four men who have successfully defended the Wimbledon title as first-time men's winners in the Open era. While he felt good throughout the early rounds of the tournament he was still pretty critical of his overall performance.
"I need to go away and make a lot of improvements in my game,'' said Murray. "I have lost a couple of matches in the last few slams, a few I have lost in straight sets and played poorly, so I need to have a think about things... because everyone's starting to get better.''
After his early exit from the tournament Murray’s girlfriend, Kim Sears, 26, made a quit exit looking visibly upset. The two left individually which was very different from Murray’s 2012 loss in the finals to Roger Federer when they left together according to TheTelegraph.
He will be heading to Miami to train for a few months but should be making an appearance at Centre Court to support his brother Jamie as he is set to play his doubles match on Thursday afternoon.
"Hopefully I will be back at Wimbledon next year after 12 months of hard work and be in a position to challenge for the title again.”
