Better Call Saul executive producer Peter Gould just made it harder for Breaking Bad fans to predict where the new spinoff will go. In an interview this week, Gould said that the show could take place at any point on the Breaking Bad timeline - before, after or even during the acclaimed AMC show.
“One of the great things about having a time line which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad and after Breaking Bad,” Gould told the The New York Daily News. “That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad.”
Before Gould’s comments, it was generally believed that Better Call Saul would be a straight prequel, with Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as attorney Saul Goodman. That’s why it made sense when Aaron Paul recently said that he couldn’t reprise his role as Jesse Pinkman, as he assumed that he couldn’t be made up to look younger than he was in the show’s first season.
Still, even if episodes do take place during Breaking Bad, Gould said that he hopes Better Call Saul can stand alone as its own series. But if Bryan Cranston wants to play Walter White again, he and Vince Gilligan won’t say no.
“We think we have a story that is worth making,” Gould told the Daily News. “We could never dream of the kind of success that Breaking Bad had and the love we got from the fans. But (with Saul) at a certain point you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it.”
Gould also said that he appreciated AMC putting in an order for a second season, even before the first airs.
Better Call Saul won’t premiere on AMC until 2015.
