The Toronto Blue Jays ended their 17-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium with a 6-4 win on Saturday.
Toronto looked poised to defeat the Bombers comfortably, heading into the bottom of the ninth with a 6-2 lead. However, the Jays had one final scare when Carlos Beltran hit a two-run home run to cut Toronto's lead in half. But that would be as close as the Yankees would get, as Blue Jay reliever Casey Janssen retired the next two men he faced, giving the visitors their first win in the Bronx since August 29, 2012.
The Yankees, who came into the game riding a four-game winning streak, had catcher Brian McCann playing first base for the injured Mark Teixeira, notes Yahoo!.
The win brings the Jays level with the Yankees for second place in the Al East, as they both trail the Oriels by three games.
Newly acquired Chris Capuano pitched well in his first game in pinstripes. The southpaw lasted six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. The former Met got off to a shaky start, but managed to work himself into the game, reports New York Daily News. It was the Yankee bullpen that lost them the game, allowing three runs in the top of the ninth, putting the game out of reach.
The two teams play Sunday at 1:05 in the rubber game of the series, which will determine who will be in sole possession of second place in the division. The Blue Jays will be sending left-hander J.A. Happ to the mound. The Yankees will go with rookie right-hander Shane Greene.
