When visiting wounded soldiers at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, Washington was so impressed that he made a sizable donation to the organization. Washington continues to be an outstanding contributor to Fisher House.
"Denzel came to visit with the soldiers and Marines being cared for at Brooke Army Medical Center," Fisher House President David Coker said, according to Veterans Today. "He visited with them and told them how much he respects their service. He also toured one of the two Fisher Houses at Brooke Army Medical Center."
The Fischer House is a unique partnership that works with military families. They house families at no cost. The Fisher Houses are 5,000 to 16,800 square foot houses where families can stay while an injured service member is receiving treatment. The houses are complete, with kitchen, laundry, dining room, and a living room with a library. Wounded soldiers injured in Iraq or Afghanistan can find solace, and appreciate their family members being nearby. The Fisher Houses also save money for families in need. Military families have saved $192 million in and for both lodging and transportation. Although they exist in many parts of the United States, Fisher House works often with military families in Los Angeles. Fisher House Foundation operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members. They host many special events including A Day for Heroes.
Executive Director and Founder of the Greater L.A. Fisher House Tim Byd gained community support for Fisher House. He works with a board of directors and is often recognized for his hard work and persistence. Like many charities, Fisher House depends on public donations, and it’s great to have the support of a celebrity like Denzel Washington. Washington began working charitably with Fisher House several years ago.
"Denzel and his wife, Pauletta, did send us a check with their donation," said James Weiskopf of Rockville, Md., the foundation's vice president for communications, according to Chron. "While we do not disclose the amount of a donation without approval from the donor, we can acknowledge that it is one of the most significant received in our history," Weiskopf said.
With his wife, Pauletta Pearson, Washington supports many charities. According to the website for Greater Los Angeles Fisher House Foundation, he donates to other charities, as well. Washington also supports Artists for a New South Africa, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Save Africa’s Children.
