The Boston Red Sox traded left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. The Red Sox will get a player to be named later.
According to ESPN, the Red Sox will get a low-level prospect after the Rule five draft for Doubront. Doubront was signed as an amateur free agent in 2005. At the time Theo Epstein was the general manager of the Red Sox. He will be reunited with Epstein, who is now president of baseball operations for the Cubs.
When the season started Doubront was in the rotation. He was moved to the bullpen due to struggles. Doubront wasn’t happy when he was moved to the bullpen.
"The thing is, if the [Red Sox] say I have to prove myself, I already did, man," Doubront said on Sunday to Boston media. "So if these guys say I have to pitch to prove whatever, no, they already know what I have. I showed them what I have as a reliever and as a starter. For me, they don't see the numbers, they don't care what I've done in the past. It's hard to be happy like that with these guys."
Doubront has made 17 appearances for the Red Sox this season. Of those 17 appearances, ten of them were starts. He is 2-4 with a 6.07 ERA this season, according to MLB.com.
Doubront will be eligible for arbitration next year. However he won’t be a free agent until 2018. The trade status of starter Jon Lester is still unknown.
