Cory Monteith’s mother spoke out publicly for the first time since her son’s tragic death last July.
Monteith, who was best known for his role as Finn Hudson on the Fox hit show Glee, was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13, 2013. The actor suffered from a drug addiction his entire life and the cause of his untimely death was ruled a “mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol,” reports E! Online.
Monteith’s mother, Ann McGregor, spoke with Good Morning America’s Brianna Golodryga for an interview that aired Thursday.
“The last few days I have been able to accept it. The loss is horrendous, until three days ago I couldn’t look at a picture of Cory. So there’s been progress,” she said.
McGregor discussed her son’s battle with substance abuse since his teen years. She revealed at age 15, Monteith did a code blue, which means he required immediate resuscitation and received a shot to his heart, according to the NY Daily News.
“After Cory’s first OD all I did is stare into his eyes and hug him and look at him. Because I had this feeling that I really want to know him because I am not going to have him my entire life and that was way back then,” McGregor said.
When asked what advice she would give mothers who have a child suffering from an addiction, McGregor said, “I don’t think we have the power to change the choices they are making.”
McGregor told Good Morning America she still keeps in touch with Monteith’s Glee co-star and girlfriend at the time of his death, Lea Michele.
“She texts and emails me. She’s hurting too, you see the sadness. I know her pain,” she said.
