European super titans Germany and France faced each other for the third time in World Cup history, and one goal would send Germany through to the semifinals. Although much was hyped about the South American game, the host nation would go on through to the next stage of the tournament.
France v. Germany, 0-1
According to France 24 the heavyweights have faced each other two other times in the semifinals, with Germany victorious in both matches. This would be France’s time for redemption, having waited for 30 years to play against the Germans again.
The only and deciding goal would come fairly early on, in the 13th, with Mats Hummel’s finding the back of the net, leading Germany to a record 4th consecutive appearance in the semifinals. France could not find their footing against a strong defense, with the Germans upsetting any chance of a comeback.
Brazil v. Colombia, 1-0
The all-South American battle is staged with host Brazil against a very strong Colombian team. Although International Business Times predicted Brazil would have a hard time covering wonder-kid James Rodríguez, they all but shut him down during most of the game.
Brazil’s goal would come early on from a corner kick sent toward the back post and team captain Thiago Silva, running into the ball with his thigh, would find the back of the net at the 7th minute. Brazil went on to dominate the rest of the game, showcasing a better performance than past games up to this point in the competition.
Off a free kick, David Luiz would make a shot from some 25 yards out, over the wall and sinking the ball out of reach of the goalkeeper in the upper right corner. A late penalty in the 80th against Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar would give Rodríguez a goal but they were not able to capitalize on another one.
Brazil will now face Germany in the semifinal on Tuesday July 8.
Saturday July 5, the quarterfinals continue with Argentina v Belgium and Netherlands v Costa Rica, with winners facing each other in the semifinals.
