Darren Collison is moving from one California team to another after sources say he has agreed to a multi-year contract with the Sacramento Kings.
Collison, who played for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, reportedly agreed to a three-year $16 million contract, according to the Los Angeles Times. "The Kings were the most aggressive team by far in the free agency, and I respected that on all levels," the former UCLA point guard said.
He played for the Clippers for one season and was due $1.985 million for a second season, but after a solid year-long performance Collison hoped the Clippers would offer him a new deal.
"Of course, I was trying to make it work with the Clippers and tried to re-sign with them. But I didn't think they really made me their first priority like the Kings did."
USA Today notes that Collison was reportedly promised to be the starting point guard for the Kings, which would be a step up from being Chris Paul's backup.
The deal, which won't become official until July 10 when free agents can actually sign their deals, likely hurts the Kings' current point guard Isaiah Thomas, who now will likely look elsewhere for a better contract and situation.
