Gilbert also reported that Arroyo has known about the injury for a month after he had an MRI that showed the ligament was completely torn off the bone, but he made six more starts.
Arroyo told Gilbert that he is determined to pitch for a couple of more years.
Arroyo has made at least 32 starts and thrown at least 199 innings from 2005-2013, according to CBS Sports.
Earlier this year, Arroyo went on the disabled list for the first time in his career with a back injury.
Prior to this season, Arroyo signed a two-year, $23.5 million contract.
Arroyo has a record of 145-131 with a 4.19 earned run average in 15 seasons in the MLB, according to Arizona Sports.
Arizona has the second worst record in baseball at 37-53 and is 13.5 games out of first place in the National League West.
