With the semi-surprising announcement that Yahoo saved Community yesterday in the 11th hour for its six season, one of the natural follow-up questions became: will this mean that a movie will soon follow? For years, fans have been chanting "six seasons and a movie," especially when the show was on the verge of extinction.
While a movie won't be happening for a least a little while, apparently talks are already in place towards making its final proclamation a reality.
When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Van Amburg, the President of Programming and Production at Sony Pictures Television, revealed that "I'd be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it. It's early but it's completely in our thought process."
Noting that "there's no way we're not making a movie now," they said that, following the film's release, they will look and "decide how much more Community the world wants." Meaning that, if successful, Community could leave on for at least a seventh season after its movie's release.
With this in mind, however, Amburg was quick to note that a movie would likely require a new deal, and would not be a part of its existing plans at the moment. "It was not part of our Yahoo conversation," he said. "We were singularly focused on getting the series picked up but I think anything is possible."
So, while this doesn't necessarily tell fans anything that they didn't hear yesterday, it should at least make them hopeful that plans are being set to make sure the show's legacy lives on. For a series that seemed so close to the cutting block a few mere days before, this is certainly some exciting news.
