Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion is set to have an MRI on his right leg this week.
The Associated Press noted that the Blue Jays slugger injured his leg Saturday in the first inning of a game against the Oakland Athletics. Encarnacion ran to first base and beat out a double play ball which allowed teammate Jose Reyes to score, however, as he reached the base he started to limp.
Blue Jays trainers helped the 31-year-old off the field and Adam Lind stepped in to replace him.
Later, Encarnacion admitted that he heard a “pop” during the play.
"I wouldn't guess it'd be a quick thing,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters. "He said he felt something pop in his quad. That's all I know right now. I'd be very surprised if he went on the DL, but I don't know that for sure yet."
The first baseman has been a major part of the team’s success this season. So far, he has 26 home runs and 70 RBIs, behind only Nelson Cruz of the Baltimore Orioles and Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox, according to Baseball-Reference.com.
Currently, the Blue Jays are one game back from the division-leading Orioles in the AL East.
