George Clooney is still not happy with the Daily Mail. While he hasn’t taken the U.K. tabloid to court yet, he has continued complaining about the paper in print and will not accept their apology.
The battle between the Hollywood heavyweight and the Mail began Wednesday morning when Clooney wrote a piece in USA Today, bringing attention to the Mail’s story about Amal Alamuddin’s mother. According to Clooney, the story about his future mother-in-law not being happy about their upcoming wedding over religious differences was completely false.
Next, the Mail pulled the story and issued a half-hearted apology. The paper is doing a full investigation, but actually stood by the source. “However, we accept Mr. Clooney's assurance that the story is inaccurate and we apologise to him, Miss Amal Alamuddin and her mother, Baria, for any distress caused,” the Mail said in a statement.
Today, Clooney went back to USA Today to lash out again. “What separates this from all of the ridiculous things the Mail makes up is that now, by their own admission, it can be proved to be a lie. In fact, a premeditated lie.,” Clooney wrote.
While he is happy they issued an apology, the Oscar winner wrote, “Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they've exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid. One that makes up its facts to the detriment of its readers and to all the publications that blindly reprint them.”
This story is clearly annoying Clooney more than any others. The Mail has made up stories about him and his relationship with Alamuddin in the past, but the religious aspect of the false report has struck a chord.
“This lie involves larger issues. The irresponsibility, in this day and age, to exploit religious differences where none exist, is at the very least negligent and more appropriately dangerous,” Clooney wrote in his first op-ed.
